Jesus had commanded the disciples to cross over by boat to the other side. Afterward, He went up into the mountain to pray. Several hours later, near daybreak, the disciples found themselves in a storm and the waves and wind were contrary – they were not making any progress. Then Jesus came to them, walking on the water. The disciples cried out, ‘it is a ghost.’
Notice carefully the response of Jesus:
Immediately,
Jesus said,
“Be encouraged,
It is I,
do not be afraid.”
His words did not stop the storm. He stopped the storm later – after all the following occurred: Peter climbed down out of the boat; he walked on the water; Jesus saved him, and the two entered the boat. Up until Jesus entered the boat, the waves and wind were still crashing all around them and all the while, it was still dark.
