We are making room for more Boards and categories. Here we are going to say a word about science. Like Art, Worship, Music, Education, and a host of other subjects, many have forgotten (or never known) what science is. So when someone hears that so-and-so showed that Science disproves the Bible or some teaching in the Bible, he might take such an assertion seriously. I will let the Evolutionists and Creationists battle it out. I have been around for long enough that "I ain’t scared." I have often said (only very slightly overstating the case) that the Creationists have never lost a debate nor won a lawsuit. If nothing else, this ought to tell us something about the direction our country has taken. For my part, I want merely to define science so that we are all on the same page.
Genuine Science deals solely with physical data or in some cases, physical behavior that can be 1. manipulated, 2. quantified, and 3. Repeated. This includes Chemistry, Physics, Some aspects of Biology, a certain segment of Clinical Psychology, but excludes Astronomy, most of Sociology, History, and anything else in which the data can only be observed or inferred, but not controlled or repeated, i.e., any aspect of things having to do with Past time or with the incorporeal world. (This might be a good place to again point out the use of Plato's Mantle. It can be read or downloaded by clicking on the "Bible Research Web Site link in the navigation Menu above, then > For those who like to read > Plato's Mantle.) So just because the subject matter is physical, or observable, does not automatically qualify it as a suitable candidate for science. This means, for example, that because we cannot manipulate the past, there can be no true science of the past - instead, there is history. A more detailed explanation is found on the Web Site > For those who like to read > Essays and Short Works > Objectivity and Empiricism in History and Science.
Does that mean that Science is useless beyond its own field? No. Archaeology and History both use scientific methods so far as they can be applied, but they also use the results of scientific discoveries to help interpret what data are available to them. Thus, we can sometimes tell what killed a Pharaoh, why certain cultures have a lower incidence of High Blood Pressure, and so forth.
So far as the truth of the Bible is concerned, science is not only a tremendous aid to Archaeology, it also helps in Validating the Genesis story. That is, there is an apologetic application of Science to Christianity. To acquaint yourself with some of what is available, click on the Bible Research link on the Navigation Menu above then > For those who like to explore > # 16. The Genesis Academy, # 17 Gravitational Relativity, and Institute for Creation Research.
