Not all philosophy is “vain jangling,” but much of what passes for “theology” these days is! Today’s “intellectual” climate seems to be a swirling cloud of relativism held together by a combination of the popular misconceptions of Hegelianism and a few tenets of Nietzsche, Darwin, Marx and Freud. Vain jangling indeed. This Philosophical amalgam is brought into the Church by “the unchurched,” goes unrecognized and unchallenged by the cusdtodians of truth, and finds a place in the front pews, making itself at home in our doctrines and practices.
At no time in history have the custodians of truth been so in need of philosophy’s gift - Logic, semantics, historiography, philosophy of science - and an understanding of epistemology. They are all lacking in most of the public figures (of whom I am aware) purveying the gospel. Is it just me or is it the case that today, seminaries seem to be little more than vocational colleges, teaching expertise in denominational history and tradition, modern priest-craft and oratorical skill?
Where does one find the requisite knowledge of Greek and Hebrew, and the immersion in hermeneutics and textual criticism that should underlie the work done in homiletics? Worse yet, where do we look to find anyone who cares about the problem?
