We might approach the situation of the great divide in the American Church in another way. How many pastors who came to the pulpit before the 80s remember what church services were like when they were young? If one of these pastors were to confront a younger pastor, one who had come to the pulpit in the 90s or later, and challenged him to adopt the older practices because they were Biblically based, not Madison Avenue work-alikes, what might the younger pastor's response be? If he adamantly refused to do so, what would his excuse be? My suspicion is that regardless of the words he used, his excuse would reveal 1) his adherence (perhaps unknowing) to relativism in his failure to recognize the Bible as the standard; 2) the complete slippage of vocabulary in his redefining "worship" to suit his situation or expectations, and 3) a complete misunderstanding or disregard for the mission of the local church.
