Good Sermons and the “Comfort Zone”
Good sermons should make people squirm in doubt and anguish, not make them comfortable. Christians are those who have already accepted the "Good News." There is nothing wrong with returning to this comfort from time to time. But Christians are not finished. They still have sins, habits, and attitudes to abandon, retool, or redirect. Pastors should get about this business. There is nothing in the “comfort zone” of a sinner that is acceptable to a holy God, If your pastor simply wants to make people feel good with his sermons, there may be a pretty good chance that he is hooked on the Madison Avenue techniques advocated by Rick Warren, and really only wants more warm bodies in his pews.
