The Sinful Nature:
The sin of Adam and its consequences (spiritual and physical death) is passed on to every human being who has a human father. (Rom 5:12, Rom 3:10) This is to say that we are all sinners by birth because we are descendants of Adam. The Scriptures above teaches that man (Adam) and not the woman (Eve) is the progenitor of sin for each of us on the earth. This helps us to understand the need for Jesus to be born outside the line of descendants from Adam. Jesus was born without a human father (virgin birth). Because the woman does not pass down the sinful nature, Jesus was born without the sinful nature. He was/is perfect. Though sinless, He chose to take on the penalty for the sins of mankind.
Committing Sin:
Each of us chooses to sin. (Ecc 7:20, Rom 3:23) Whether in thought, tongue, or action, we commit sin. We are sinners by birth and sinners by choice. True it is that we do some good things from time to time; however, greed, selfish ambition, lusts, and more are at the core of our being. We are corrupt, we are sinners by choice.
The Wages of Sin:
“For the wages of sin is death…(Separation from God). (Rom 6:23) However, the believer is born again and his spirit becomes alive. He is born again and can have ongoing fellowship with God.
God’s Gospel:
The Gospel of God (1 Cor 15:1-4): Jesus, the innocent, took upon Himself our sins as His own (paid the penalty) according to the Scriptures. He was buried in a grave. He rose from the dead. He then ascended into heaven and now sits at the right hand of God the Father. So Jesus has provided a way for everyone to be saved: You must believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross in your place and for your sins. There are no good works for you to do. (Titus 3:5) Remember, Jesus paid the penalty. He suffered – the Just one for the unjust ones (us). Our opportunity: Believe in this gospel, believe in Jesus Christ as your Savior from sin.
On the justice side of the gospel, punishment and justice were meted out on the person of Jesus Christ. He suffered on the cross from the hands of man and at the hands of God the Father. All sin of all mankind was put on Jesus Christ on the cross. The penalty was paid. Sins were not dismissed, ignored or excused.
On the grace and mercy side of the gospel, man is offered the free gift of eternal life. We cannot and will never be able to earn such a gift. God made it absolutely free for us. It is NOT based on our behavior or actions before we become a Christian and we do not keep our salvation based on behavior or actions after we are saved. “The Christian's liberty to do precisely as he chooses is as limitless and perfect as any other aspect of grace." L.S.Chafer
After believing in Jesus Christ as our sin-bearer, we should learn and faithfully follow the teachings of the Holy Spirit as revealed in God’s word. Again, we should do this. However, this wonderful gospel does NOT require being a devoted follower of Jesus Christ – as a requirement to become saved or to remain saved. "A faithful reading of the entire Book of Acts fails to reveal a single passage where people are found to acknowledge Jesus Christ as their personal Lord in order to be saved." (Author unknown)
If you have trusted in Jesus Christ as Savior, then you are born again. There is no way that a person can be unborn. All of your sins have been forgiven. This is irreversible – God does not go back on His word. You have eternal life – not a temporary life with hopes of it being upgraded to eternal life. You have eternal life right now! You are guaranteed to have NO future punitive punishment from God. (…there is NOW no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Rom 8:1)
Yet some of you probably think that you can lose this wonderful gift of salvation. You think that there are certain sins or quantity of sins that will cause one to lose their salvation. And you probably think that there is a certain someone that you know that was once clearly a believer and now has nothing to do with Christ. The longer you are a Christian, the better the chance that you will see such a one. “Judge not according to appearance...” (John 7:24) You do NOT know that person’s heart.
I ask you to think about this: Satan is one of the strongest and most intelligent of all created beings. He is known as a master of deception and lies. If there was any way that you could lose your salvation, then Satan would make it happen. I guarantee you that if it is possible that you COULD lose your salvation, then you WILL lose your salvation. Satan will know just when and how to deceive you and outsmart you.
I do not remain saved, born again, redeemed, or justified because I remain true to Christ and try to hold tight to Him. I remain saved because He is holding on to me. (John 10:27-28) I belong to Him. I am His own. In His matchless grace, He holds me. Unworthy, inconsistent, failing person that I am – all is forgiven and I am His child forever. I’m just a sinner saved by grace! Virtually every believer in Scripture had his moments of failure and weakness.
God in His matchless grace and mercy guarantees us a free and bountiful salvation without having to earn it, keep it, or wonder about it. For by GRACE you are saved by faith. He saves you by His grace and He keeps you by His grace. No one will be able to take me out of His hands. (Rom 8:38-39)
“I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand.” (John 10:27-28)
